The Bureau

So how’s everybody doing lately, I’ve been doing good I actually just came back from Texas. But the reason I’m telling you this is because in Fort Worth, Texas is the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP); and for those of you who don’t know, the BEP is the sole producer of all US paper currency since 1877. The BEP also produces several other security documents such as U.S. passports, materials for Homeland Security, military identification cards and Immigration and Naturalization Certificates, but is still well know for printing currency. There is only two BEPs one in Fort Worth, Texas and another in Washington, D.C. Although most believe the dollar bill comes fro the US Mint, only coins are created at the US Mint. Though new printing , production and examing technologies have brought the BEP into the 21st century, to help stop counterfeiters, the Bureau’s engravers continue to use the same traditional tools used over 125 years ago – the graver, the burnisher, and the hand-held glass. And they gave us a sneak peak that there will be new hundred dollar bill coming out, but the official date is unknown but either this year or 2009. If anyone gets the chance I would highly recommend taking the free tour, not only will you see large, blank sheets of paper turn into wallet-ready bills but you will see millions of dollars in less then an hour.

Hey Steven,

Good job on your post! You told us a lot of information from your free tour of the BEP. I wonder what the new hundred dollar bill is going to look like.

Besides the BEP, the Government Printing Office in D.C. prints passports, too. They have a lot of features to stop counterfeiters like money does.

I am doing good; enjoying my new apartment. I spent some time today comparing the different home phone plans.

I've never been to Texas before. Was it a fun place?

Hey Steve,
There's a Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) in FortWorth, Texas and the U.S. Mint is only responsible for coinage... Who knew! I'm sure this is a bit of trivia question info I'll need to remember during a "Who wants to be a millionair" moment. LOL

P.S. Did you see the movie
"Mad Money"? LOL...If you didn't, go get a copy.. As a matter of fact, anyone that reads this post should watch!

Hello Steven,
As I was reading your post...I do recall going to the BEP in Washington when I was in middle school. It was so cool. All that money in one room, it was an incredible experience. I think I will plan a trip to go again soon.

Hey Steven,

This sounds like a really interesting trip. Did you take any pics? If so, you should post 'em.

BTW, it was great seeing you and Priscilla at the scholarship ceremony last month.

Take care!

So I have always wanted to go see how the money was printed and it sounds like you had a great time. I went to the US Mint I guess thats what it was, it was in DC and that was pretty awesome. Definitely post your pictures online if you took any!
While you were there were you able to get any information on your topic or outreach ideas?

I also had no clue that the US Mint was only responsible for coinage! Huh! Along with budgeting, setting financial goals, and credit.. just one more thing I was never taught in high school- or even undergrad for that matter!
